Siege of Sarajevo: The Longest Siege of a Capital City in the History of Modern Warfare



The Siege of Sarajevo was the longest siege of a capital city in the history of modern warfare. The siege lasted from 5 April 1992 to 29 February 1996 during the Bosnian Genocide. During the siege, Serb forces killed 11,541 residents, including over 1,500 children, while 56,000 residents were wounded, including nearly 15,000 children.
